Bloggggggggg! Persecution. Tears. Chuckie.

Sorry the blog hasn't been updated since Tuesday. We have had two late and emotional nights; which you'll soon read about. It has been awesome to see God working in the hearts and lives of these students. It has been an amazing week and I am looking forward to finishing strong. Thank you all for your prayers and support!

Okay well where to start…I can start with today I taught people how God made us.  The nerves were stressful but I had soooooo much support that I got through it successfully. But we all had the opportunity to spend quality time with new friends from VBS. Then other parts of the day we did landscaping while some people played and gave food to the homeless. But the group I was in was working on a hillside and a lady came up to Emily and was telling us how blessed she was because her statue was next to it and cleaning it out made it look so much better then it did before. Everyone on this trip is being reminded of Philippians 2:14 but everyone is learning quickly ;)

Today was a very good day; the summer day camp kids were great. We did see another building catch on fire. That was the second building we have seen catch on fire, the one before was really bad. There were two fire trucks respond to it. The one we saw today was tiny and a fire mini-van. Tonight after we are done working we get to go on a tour of Detroit, it’s going to be loads of fun. Last night Peter took us to Coldstone and it was very good.

July 14th, 2011 Thursday

Many exciting things went on today, as well as last night. Last night, Peter and the leaders took us to Coldstone Creamery to reward us for our hard work over the past few days. I had tons of fun goofing off with the group. As far as today, we all took on our 2nd day being apart of the Youth for Christ VBS(or day camp as they call it here). Alex Jung taught the kids a lesson on how much God loves us. The kids got along really well while we participated in the activities planned for today. After day camp, I spent my time cleaning inside and setting the tables up for dinner with a few other people while everybody else went outside to clean up different lots. Before dinner, we set up an assembly line and made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to go deliver to the homeless along with other food like fruits, veggies, water/juice, etc. Later tonight, we’re going on a downtown tour of Detroit to visit different artistic buildings such as the artist who painted many abandoned houses to make them have meaning. While I’ve been in Detroit, I feel that God has opened my eyes to what some people’s lives are like and that’s taught me to appreciate people more than I do. Also, I’ve learned to do everything without arguing or complaining as stated in Philippians 2:14. I think God has spoken to all of the kids(and even leaders) on this missions trip and has showed us that a little hard work, dedication, and support can do to help a community like this in need.

On Wednesday July 13 about half the mission team including myself visited some homeless people to hand out lunches and pray for them. There was one man in particular that really impacted me in a good and a bad way. Micah Froman, Gabi Fadden, Matt Koenig, Ashley Reijonen, and I went to talk to a man sitting alone in the grass, eating the lunch we had given him. When we got over there, he had immediately made it clear to us he didn’t want us there. He started cussing and mocking us. However, we decided to continue to pray for him. As I started to pray he cut me off and shut us out. It really hit me. I was scared because we had no idea whether he was drunk or mentally gone, hurt, and I felt so rejected.
That night when we had our debriefing session in the church, Peter brought up that man. He talked to us that what we had experience was like a very small scale of what had happened to the prophets because they had followed Jesus. It even relates to how Jesus was mocked and made fun of. In Matthew 5:10-13 it says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” When he told us this, I realized that even though at the time I thought it was a bad thing, it actually could have been a good thing. I will definitely remember those few moments to tell others about and share what it was like to be in a similar experience to Jesus. –Lily Fell 

Today we hung out with the kids at the Youth for Christ building. We had a lot of fun had a really good lunch (taco’s….yummm). We had competitions outside today we did a three legged race and played “Steal the Bacon”. Yesterday (July 13, 2011) we went to a park were homeless people stay and we gave them a lunch and a choice of either water or a juice-box. Well Gabi Fadden, Lily Fell, Micah Froman, Matt Koenig, and Ashley Reijonen, and I went to this guy that was eating a lunch we gave him and asked him if he wanted to pray for him and at first we think that he said “Go away” or something like that and then we asked him again and he said “Sure yeah, lets get in a circle and hold hands.” Like he was mocking us. Then while Lily was praying he cut her off, just started saying stuff and was cussing. I was kinda scared. But last night Lily told Peter about it and he said that you are blessed when you get persecuted, and that was a mini version of what happened to God when people did that to him. In Matthew 5:10-12 it says Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Then I thought in my head that we actually thought that was he did was a bad thing, but it actually kinda was a good thing.
And for my brother, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JJ hope you had a great day!!!  -Charlette-

Yesterday was amazing! teaching was so much fun… we also had a giant cry fest. even I was crying and I think God was working through me and peter cause the missions meeting where the parents came to I had asked peter if I could teach and I think God was telling me to ask him that cause when I taught we used the verse Hebrews 13:5b which says “God has said that he will never leave us or forsake us.” I think God told peter to put the cooking crew in mike’s van so I had to go to Mrs. Kelly’s van. when I got there they were all crying cause Micah told us some stuff and he had a dream THAT HE WAS alone and I think that God saw satan giving Micah this dream and told peter to switch the cooking crew into the other van so I could go in to Mrs. Kelly’s van and talk with them, cry with them, and sing with them. we also think god sent me there so we could finally figure out how mighty God is and what he can do cause the memory verse went perfect with it so we helped him through this. he brought me, Micah, and Courtney, closer together and we got closer together it helped us get closer to God. ~Alex Jung

This week has been the most amazing week I have ever had in my life! I cried yesterday because Micah told us a story about his father. That just made me think of how when I was born I had to have surgery because I had 3 holes in my heart. The doctors had asked my parents if they wanted me to have the surgery or not. So I sorta knew how Micah felt and why he was crying. I cried too, but most of us did anyways. I also learned to never let Alex have juice and spill water on him because he will get your shirt very bad. But tonight us girls are planning a prank on him! We took a doll and chopped it’s head off and Amanda took a pen and (it was a red pen) made like the eye bleed and the ear. It totally freaked me out so I hope it freaks Alex out to. The only reason we are doing this to Alex because while the other day we were working the guys found a baby doll and named it chuckie ( it had 1 leg 2 arms and no head) so I bought a baby doll and we chopped the head off so we could prank Alex.  :D I also Love everyone that’s here!!!!! ~ Ceirra Shipman
